The Oropouche virus (OROV) is an arbovirus belonging to the Peribunyaviridae family that is mostly spread via biting midges (Culicoides paraensis) and mosquitos. It was first recognized in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955 and has subsequently spread to several Central and South American nations, most notably Brazil.

Key Points
1) Transmission:-
- The biting midge Culicoides paraensis and several mosquito species serve as the major vectors.
- Human-to-human transmission is uncommon, however there have been reports of nosocomial (hospital-acquired) transmission.
2) Symptoms :-
- The incubation period is typically 4-8 days.
- Symptoms resemble those of dengue fever and include high fever, headache, myalgia (muscle pain), arthralgia (joint pain), rash, and photophobia.
- Symptoms usually resolve within a week, but some individuals may experience prolonged fatigue and weakness.
3)Epidemiology :-
- Outbreaks tend to occur in urban and rural areas with high vector populations.
- The virus has caused numerous outbreaks in the Amazon region, affecting thousands of people.

4) Diagnosis :-
- Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical presentation and history of exposure.
- Laboratory tests include RT-PCR, virus isolation, and serological tests (ELISA and neutralization assays).
5) Treatment and Prevention :-
- There is no specific antiviral treatment for Oropouche virus infection.
- Supportive care is the mainstay of treatment, focusing on relieving symptoms.
- Vector management strategies, such as minimizing standing water where midges and mosquitos thrive, applying insect repellent, and putting up protective barriers like window screens and bed nets, are used to prevent transmission.
6) Public Health Impact :-
- Oropouche virus is a significant public health concern in affected regions due to its ability to cause large outbreaks and the similarity of its symptoms to other arboviral diseases, complicating diagnosis and management.
